European tomato prices show high volatility across markets
European tomato prices have experienced significant volatility, with average prices reaching 1.55 euro per kilogram in August 2026, exceeding the five-year average in several countries. In the Netherlands, greenhouse tomato prices on the vine reached 1.17 euro per kg.
Despite rising retail prices, farmers face financial pressure due to increased production costs and extreme weather conditions. The market shows high regional differentiation: while some areas see price spikes, others remain below historical averages. In Italy, cherry tomatoes and specialty varieties were 6% below the five-year average in August. In Spain, standard round tomatoes were 1% lower than the average, and vine tomatoes saw a 23% decrease compared to August 2025.
In Poland, domestic tomato prices remained at a sustained high level throughout most of August and the first half of September, reaching historical peaks at the beginning of the autumn season before experiencing a slight decline.
