European tomato producers face declining profitability despite price increases

The European Commission’s Tomato Expert Group met in Brussels to analyze the challenges facing the European tomato market. Despite improvements in prices, producers are facing a decline in profitability due to rising production costs, including energy, fertilizers, and petroleum derivatives.

In Spain, the 2025/2026 campaign is expected to see a production decrease of approximately 2%. This decline is attributed to the use of virus-resistant but less productive varieties, phytosanitary issues, and adverse weather conditions. The Spanish delegation, including FEPEX director Ignacio Antequera, also highlighted concerns regarding competition from non-EU countries and difficulties in securing labor.

The meeting included representatives from several member states, including Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Poland, to discuss market perspectives through 2035 and the impact of external competition on the sector.
