European traffic signs: French signal symbols and Spanish emission zones

Drivers traveling through Europe should be aware of specific local traffic signs and signals to avoid confusion or fines.

In France, a red Greek cross (croix grecque) may appear on traffic lights. This symbol is not a new command but serves as a repetition of the red light from the opposing direction. It informs drivers that oncoming traffic has a red light, which can help identify safe windows for turning left. It does not grant new driving rights and drivers must still follow their own signal.

In Spain, motorists must watch for Low Emission Zone (ZBE) signs. These signs feature a car surrounded by dots representing emissions, often accompanied by plates indicating permitted ecological categories (0, ECO, C, or B). Entering a restricted zone with a non-compliant vehicle can result in a 200 euro fine, which may be reduced to 100 euros if paid promptly. Cities often use automated camera systems to monitor these zones, meaning fines may arrive after the trip has concluded.
