European transit authorities expand electric bus fleets

Public transportation authorities in Germany and Italy are advancing the electrification of their vehicle fleets.

In Sylt, Germany, the Sylter Verkehrsgesellschaft (SVG) is testing an electric minibus based on the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter platform. The vehicle features a low-floor area with a ramp for accessibility and offers a range of over 250 kilometers per charge. SVG plans to expand its electric fleet from seven to 14 buses, with regular service for new vehicles expected between 2027 and 2028.

In Lecce, Italy, SGM is introducing six new zero-emission electric buses, valued at approximately 480,000 euros each, which are expected to enter service by the end of October. This move is part of a broader strategy to replace diesel and methane vehicles. Additionally, the administration is seeking ministerial funding to modernize the city's trolleybus network, which includes plans to acquire 27 new-generation trolleybuses to replace aging infrastructure.
