European travel trends and Greek hotel investments

European Best Destinations has announced its top 10 cities for city breaks in 2027, following a vote by over 11,000 travelers. Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, secured the first position due to its blend of historical heritage, such as the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and modern urban life, alongside proximity to Vitosha Mountain.

The top destinations include Lisbon, Copenhagen, Cannes, Basel, Bristol, Leuven, Milan, Calpe, and Verona.

In Greece, major hotel groups are increasing investments in urban centers. The Karatzis Group is planning to enter the Athens market with a potential luxury hotel project near Syntagma Square, estimated at 80 million euros. Additionally, the Mitsis Group is developing a five-star hotel in the former Sliman-Melas building in Athens through a long-term contract with e-EFKA. The Tornivoukas family is also entering the Athenian market via a long-term lease of the former TSMEDE building on Kolokotroni Street.
