European travel trends show rise in slow and solo travel

The DERTOUR Group’s European Travel Trend Report reveals a significant shift in how Europeans approach vacations, highlighting a growing preference for “slow travel” and solo trips.

According to the report, over 53% of European travelers are interested in slow travel, a movement focused on reducing stress, increasing well-being, and experiencing destinations at a more relaxed pace. Many travelers, particularly those aged 25-44, are seeking a “digital detox” to disconnect from social media. This has led to the emergence of the “JOMO” (Joy of Missing Out) traveler, who prioritizes a few meaningful experiences over a crowded itinerary.

Solo travel is also on the rise, with nearly 30% of respondents planning to travel alone within the next year. This trend is most prominent among single individuals, at 37.6%, though approximately one in four married or partnered travelers also considers solo trips. Germany and Sweden show high interest in solo travel, while France also remains a significant market for this trend.
