Brakel breeding station launches European tree frog conservation program
A breeding station in Brakel, located at the Bildungshaus Modexen, has expanded its conservation efforts to include the European tree frog (Hyla arborea). This initiative, described by its founders as an ‘amphibian ark’, aims to support the species which has been in decline in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia.
Biologist Dennis Wiegard manages the station, which has been operating for three years. While the facility previously focused on species such as the common toad, midwife toad, and yellow-bellied toad, the tree frog breeding program began this year. The process involves specialized care, including preparing food for tadpoles and managing terrariums for the climbing frogs.
