European Union adopts new Return Order, Spain stands alone in opposition

The European Parliament and Council have approved a European Return Order aimed at accelerating the removal of irregular migrants. The measure also opens the possibility of establishing deportation centers outside the bloc through agreements with third countries. Spain was the sole member state to vote against the initiative, warning of legal risks, political implications, and doubts about the protection of fundamental rights. Analysts note the decision marks a shift in EU migration policy driven by growing influence of nationalist and far‑right parties, raising concerns over EU values, demographic challenges and the balance between border control and human‑rights obligations.

The new framework signals a more stringent approach to migration management across the Union, while highlighting internal dissent and the potential impact on EU’s international image and legal responsibilities.
