European Union agriculture faces climate damage and organic targets

The European Union is facing significant agricultural challenges due to climate change and evolving environmental targets. EU Commissioner Christophe Hansen estimated that heat, drought, and fires caused between 14 and 17 billion euros in damages to the agricultural sector this summer. Hansen noted that farmers are the first victims of climate change, highlighting issues such as insufficient fodder growth and water scarcity.

To mitigate future risks, there is a push for increased investment in water storage, precision irrigation, and mandatory insurance. Currently, only 12 percent of EU agricultural production is covered by insurance. Meanwhile, the EU remains committed to its goal of having 25 percent of agricultural land managed organically by 2030. However, Eurostat data shows that only about 11 percent of land is currently organic, suggesting a need for increased consumer demand and public sector support to meet the target.

Public sentiment in Europe shows strong support for stable food supplies and recognizes the role of farmers in climate protection, though there is a call for production methods to adapt to environmental changes.
