European Union AI Act implementation and compliance timelines

The European Union is implementing the EU AI Act (Regulation (EU) 2024/1689) through a staggered timeline designed to regulate artificial intelligence based on risk levels. While the framework aims to ensure AI is safe, transparent, and human-centric, specific compliance deadlines vary depending on the category of the AI system.

A recent extension under Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 has shifted the application date for certain high-risk AI systems—specifically those classified under Article 6(2) and Annex III, such as those used in employment, education, and critical infrastructure—from August 2, 2026, to December 2, 2027. This provides a sixteen-month extension for providers and deployers to complete documentation and conformity assessments.

However, this extension is narrow and does not apply to the entire Act. Other requirements, such as Article 50 transparency obligations, remain scheduled for August 2, 2026. These rules include mandates for labeling AI-generated content, such as images, video, or audio, on digital platforms. The Act also includes bans on certain unacceptable-risk AI uses and establishes specific obligations for General Purpose AI (GPAI) models.
