European Union to end Russian gas imports by 2027

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that the European Union plans to completely phase out imports of Russian gas by the end of 2027. Speaking at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, she noted that the share of Russian gas in EU imports has already dropped from 45% to 12%.

Under the proposed timeline, the EU intends to implement a total ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) starting January 1, 2027, followed by a complete cessation of Russian pipeline gas imports by the autumn of 2027.

Von der Leyen highlighted the economic impact of the energy crisis, stating that gas prices have risen by 140% since late February and diesel prices have doubled. She added that imported fossil fuels have cost Europe an additional 100 billion euros since the start of the war. The Commission emphasized that over 70% of EU electricity is currently generated from domestic clean energy sources, including nuclear and renewables.
