European Union announces €170 million investment in African healthcare
The European Union has announced a financial commitment of nearly €170 million to strengthen medical infrastructure and healthcare systems across the African continent. Coordinated by the European Commission and participating member states, the funding package aims to enhance healthcare sovereignty and reduce reliance on imported pharmaceuticals.
This initiative is a central part of the European Global Health Resilience Initiative, which seeks to address systemic medical vulnerabilities. The funding is designed to help establish independent healthcare networks capable of managing infectious outbreaks and ensuring the delivery of critical medical supplies to vulnerable populations.
Specific allocations include €6.5 million dedicated to expanding sustainable pathogen genomics capacity and over €30 million for clinical research programs and pandemic preparedness. The investment also focuses on developing regulatory frameworks to support long-term institutional stability and regional security.
