European Union announces 200 million euro investment in Greenland
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced a 200 million euro investment package for Greenland through the Global Gateway initiative. During her visit to Nuuk, the announcement aimed to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation between the European Union and the autonomous territory.
The investment will target critical sectors including critical raw materials, renewable energy, and digital connectivity. This move comes as Greenland becomes a focal point of geopolitical competition in the Arctic involving the United States, China, and Russia. The EU views Greenland as a vital source of materials necessary for the digital and energy transitions.
While the package is intended to deepen long-term partnerships, the European Commission emphasized that the political and territorial future of Greenland remains a matter for the people of Greenland and the Kingdom of Denmark.
