European Union approves largest-ever sanctions package against Russia

European Union ambassadors have unanimously approved a major new sanctions package targeting Russia's military-industrial complex. The package includes approximately 1,646 new designations, marking the largest single expansion of the EU's sanctions blacklist to date.

The measures primarily focus on entities and individuals linked to Russia's defense apparatus, including missile production and military supply chains. More than half of the new targets are involved in these sectors. The package also includes 77 Russian lawmakers who participated in elections held in occupied Ukrainian territories, as well as several actors linked to North Korea.

Following this approval, the sanctions will be forwarded to EU foreign ministers for formal adoption on October 12 in Luxembourg. This expansion brings the total number of individuals and entities sanctioned by the EU due to the war in Ukraine to approximately 3,000.

In a separate strategic shift, the EU intends to move away from massive, infrequent sanction packages in favor of smaller, more frequent updates to maintain consistent pressure.
