European Union approves new driving license regulations

The European Parliament has approved new driving license regulations under the fourth EU Driving License Directive, aimed at increasing road safety and streamlining processes across member states.

Key changes include revised weight limits for Class B licenses. Drivers may soon be permitted to operate vehicles up to five tons and heavy trailers under specific conditions, a move intended to benefit emergency services and volunteer organizations. For camping enthusiasts, motorhomes up to 4.25 tons plus a trailer can be driven with a Class B license following specific training or examinations. The reform also accounts for the increased weight of batteries in electric vehicles.

Enforcement of serious traffic violations, such as driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and excessive speeding, will become cross-border, allowing for the enforcement of driving bans throughout the EU.

Additionally, the EU is moving toward a unified digital driving license, expected to be available via smartphone in all member states by 2030. While physical cards will remain an option, organizations like the TÜV-Verband are calling for member states to establish the necessary infrastructure for a fully digital process, from application to issuance.
