European Union approves new regulation for migrant return centers
The European Union has approved a new legal framework that allows member states to transfer individuals without the right to remain in the EU to specialized return centers located in non-EU countries. Approved by interior ministers in Luxembourg, the new Return Regulation replaces the 2008 Return Directive.
EU officials state the regulation aims to increase the efficiency of deportations. Irish Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan noted that currently, approximately two out of three people ordered to leave the EU do not actually depart. The new rules are intended to facilitate faster and more effective returns.
Under the new framework, individuals must cooperate with authorities; failure to do so may result in penalties such as reduced benefits or fines. Those deemed security risks could face entry bans of 24 months or indefinite periods. While the Council maintains that all measures must respect fundamental human rights, human rights organizations have warned that legal safeguards may not be effectively applied in practice.
