European Union budget negotiations face tension from Italy and France

European leaders are facing significant friction during negotiations for the European Union’s next seven-year budget. At the European Council, discussions are being complicated by various governments, notably Italy, which is advocating for greater fiscal flexibility.

In France, Marine Le Pen, leader of the Rassemblement National, has signaled a potential confrontation with Brussels should she win the upcoming presidential elections. Le Pen has expressed intentions to challenge the European Commission’s authority over diplomacy and defense, aiming to return power to national capitals. She has also criticized the current budget negotiation process and suggested that France should drastically reduce its financial contributions to the EU.

Furthermore, Le Pen has questioned the leadership of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, suggesting that the President may no longer hold the confidence of many EU governments. These tensions come as leaders attempt to finalize long-term fiscal agreements amidst rising nationalist sentiment across Europe.
