European Union budget negotiations focus on Cohesion Policy
Negotiations in Brussels regarding the new European Union budget for the 2028–2034 period are centering on the future of Cohesion Policy. The discussions involve the allocation of resources, decision-making powers, and the specific role of regional authorities.
A key point of contention is whether regions will maintain direct access to EU funds and a significant voice in decision-making, or if management will shift toward a more nationally controlled framework. Cohesion Policy is viewed as a vital tool for reducing economic and social inequalities by supporting infrastructure, entrepreneurship, employment, and innovation.
Kata Tüttő, President of the European Committee of the Regions, has stated that Cohesion Policy is an instrument of European competitiveness rather than charity. In Greece, the preservation of these funds is considered essential for regional development and the utilization of programs such as NSRF.
