European Union calls for combatting religious discrimination and violence

The European Union has issued a call to combat discrimination and violence based on religion or belief. In a statement released on behalf of the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas emphasized that freedom of thought, conscience, religion, or belief is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The EU noted that approximately two-thirds of the world's population lives in countries where this right is seriously violated. Millions of people face intolerance, hatred, and violence due to their actual or perceived religious beliefs, or due to non-belief, with many losing their lives as a result.

The EU highlighted its specific initiatives to combat antisemitism and Islamophobia, while also condemning discrimination against Christians and other religious communities. To increase global awareness, the European Commission has appointed a Special Representative for the Promotion of Freedom of Religion or Belief to engage with third countries. The EU also supports United Nations efforts and funds projects to strengthen religious freedom in Asia and promotes dialogue in the Sahel region.
