European Union considers sanctions timeline and visa restrictions for Russians
The European Union is evaluating the future of its sanctions regime against Russia, with diplomatic circles considering a potential suspension of new sanctions after February 2027. This timeline is linked to political shifts within the EU, specifically the upcoming French presidential elections, which could influence the consensus required for new restrictive measures.
In parallel, the European Commission is tightening visa policies for Russian citizens. Following recent EU summits, member states are advocating for stricter requirements. Data indicates a significant decline in visa issuance, dropping from approximately 4 million in 2022 to roughly 620,000 in 2025.
Further measures are expected as part of the 21st sanctions package, which includes a proposed visa ban targeting combatants, former soldiers of the Russian armed forces, and members of armed groups involved in the conflict in Ukraine. While individual member states manage visa applications on a case-by-case basis, the Commission is coordinating EU-level action to enhance security assessments.
