Europe faces rising hybrid threats and new EU sanctions against Russia

European leaders and intelligence officials are warning of an escalation in Russian hybrid warfare, which combines cyberattacks, disinformation, and sabotage to destabilize the continent. Recent incidents include the discovery of an explosive-laden drone at Leipzig Airport in Germany and a drone interception over Lithuania. Intelligence officials have cautioned that Moscow may target NATO within months, with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk suggesting Russia is testing the limits of Article 5.

In response to the ongoing conflict, the European Union has adopted its 19th sanctions package. Key measures include a ban on Russian LNG imports for short-term contracts within six months and restrictions on the Russian-backed A7A5 stablecoin. The package also targets the ‘shadow fleet’ by banning 117 additional ships from EU ports and imposing sanctions on entities in third countries that help bypass existing restrictions.

Meanwhile, diplomatic tensions persist between Ukraine and the United States. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested urgent missile defense systems and satellite support from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. These requests come amid reports of technical issues with Starlink and Starshield systems, as well as concerns regarding the withholding of intelligence and ammunition by Washington.
