European Union debates satellite sovereignty and future space funding

EU policymakers, telecommunications authorities, and the Barcelona-based satellite company Sateliot met at the European Parliament in Brussels to discuss the future of European satellite sovereignty. The discussions focused on how radio frequencies and upcoming funding cycles will influence control over orbital communications.

The current EU space programme, valued at €14.8 billion for the 2021-2027 period, is nearing its end alongside the bloc's Multiannual Financial Framework. For the 2028-2034 cycle, the European Commission proposes transitioning to a new European Competitiveness Fund, which could allocate €131 billion toward strategic industries, including defense and space.

In preparation for these shifts, the Commission's defense and space department, DG DEFIS, recently closed bids for a €55 million, four-year framework contract. This contract is intended to provide management and legal support for the IRIS² secure satellite constellation, space surveillance and tracking, and the analysis of the space economy.
