European Union discusses migration management in third countries

European Union ministers recently discussed the migration crisis, specifically regarding the possibility of establishing return hubs in third countries. Under new EU regulations effective June 12, member states can enter agreements to create centers for processing asylum seekers or managing the repatriation of non-EU citizens after asylum applications are rejected.

However, the economic viability of these hubs remains a significant concern. Previous attempts by Western nations have faced challenges; for instance, the United Kingdom's 2022 agreement to transfer asylum seekers to Rwanda was rejected by the British Supreme Court in July 2023.
