European Union driving license reform impacts senior drivers

A European Union reform regarding driving licenses aims to harmonize documents across member states and enhance road safety. For senior drivers, the reform primarily introduces more frequent administrative renewals rather than requiring new driving or theory exams.

Under the new rules, member states may choose to reduce the validity period of licenses for drivers over 65, potentially requiring renewals every 5 or 10 years. The older paper-style licenses remain valid until January 19, 2033, after which they will be replaced by a more secure credit-card-sized format. Standard renewals for the new format will occur every 15 years.

The renewal process involves specific administrative steps, including gathering identity documents, recent photos, and proof of residence. For certain drivers, a medical examination by an approved physician is mandatory to obtain the necessary certification for the renewal.
