European Union Drugs Agency reports rising cocaine and ketamine use

Analysis from the European Union Drugs Agency reveals shifting drug consumption patterns across Europe based on wastewater samples from 115 cities in 25 countries. The 2025 data indicates a significant rise in cocaine and ketamine levels.

Cocaine metabolites in wastewater increased by 22% compared to 2024, with the highest concentrations found in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Spain. Ketamine saw the largest relative surge, with levels rising by 41%, particularly in cities within Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.

In contrast, MDMA levels decreased by approximately 16% across Europe, while cannabis consumption remained relatively stable. The study notes that while wastewater analysis is an established tool for tracking geographic and temporal trends, it does not provide data on the specific number of users or their social demographics.
