European Union enforces mandatory AI content labeling

The European Union has begun enforcing new transparency obligations under Article 50 of the EU AI Act, effective August 2. These regulations require companies to clearly label AI-generated or manipulated content that is designed to appear authentic.

Mandatory disclosures apply to images, audio, and video that resemble real people, places, or events. Additionally, AI-generated text concerning matters of public interest—such as politics, health, or science—must be labeled if it lacks human editorial oversight. For audio deepfakes, the rules mandate a short audible disclaimer at the start of the content.

While the EU has developed a specific set of icons for this purpose, using them is optional; however, the underlying disclosure of synthetic content remains compulsory. The rules apply to any company targeting EU citizens, regardless of their global headquarters. Anthropic has already announced compliance by implementing invisible watermarks on its text outputs. Furthermore, over 190 organizations, including Google, Meta, and Microsoft, have signed a voluntary Code of Good Practice to support AI content transparency.
