European Union enlargement shows divide between candidate and wealthy nations

The landscape of European Union enlargement shows a divide between candidate nations seeking membership and wealthy European states opting out. Nine candidate countries are currently competing for EU membership. Ukraine and Moldova have completed legislative reviews to align with EU rules, while Montenegro has opened all 33 negotiation chapters. Albania has also opened all negotiation chapters and temporarily closed three.

In contrast, Iceland, a wealthy and stable nation, recently rejected a proposal to reopen membership negotiations. Voters rejected the proposal with 52.8 percent against it. Iceland maintains its economic benefits through the European Economic Area and the Schengen Area without pursuing full EU membership. Experts suggest that while membership offers geopolitical support and access to funds for developing nations, the economic advantages are already largely secured for integrated, wealthy nations like Iceland.
