European Union exceeds 2025 sustainable aviation fuel targets

The European Union has exceeded its regulatory target for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for 2025. According to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), SAF accounted for 2.8% of the 1.1 million tonnes delivered to EU airports, surpassing the 2% mandate. This represents a nearly sixfold increase in SAF volume compared to 2024.

Used cooking oil remains the primary feedstock, accounting for 80% of the total SAF volume. While 84% of the SAF supplied in the EU is produced within the region, 85% of the necessary raw materials are imported. Major suppliers of these feedstocks include China (61%), Malaysia (8%), and Indonesia (5%).

The European Commission noted that these trends suggest the EU is on track to meet the 6% SAF incorporation target mandated by the ReFuelEU Aviation legislation by 2030. As aviation decarbonization progresses, the used-oil sector has become a strategic link in the global energy supply chain, driving demand for certified and traceable feedstock.
