European Union expands Russia sanctions and prepares for October summit
The European Union has implemented its largest single expansion of sanctions against Russia, targeting 826 companies and 743 individuals. The Council of the European Union stated these entities supply critical components for missiles, drones, and aircraft, including navigation systems and electronics. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized that the measures are intended to increase pressure on Moscow following continued attacks on Ukraine.
Separately, European Council President António Costa has announced an upcoming summit in Brussels on October 15-16. The meeting will address high energy prices, the EU’s 2028-2034 multiannual financial framework budget, and continued support for Ukraine. Leaders are expected to discuss long-term strategies to reduce fossil fuel dependence and review Ukraine’s progress toward EU membership. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to provide input regarding Ukraine’s critical infrastructure needs ahead of winter.
