Europe energy security concerns rise amid low gas reserves and high oil prices
Europe faces heightened energy security risks as winter approaches, driven by low natural gas reserves and rising fossil fuel prices. EU gas storage levels are currently at approximately 66% capacity, marking a 15-year low for this period. Germany is particularly vulnerable; its storage levels were reported at roughly 53% in early September, and experts from the INES association warn that even if levels reach a maximum of 77% by November, a severe winter could still trigger supply shortages.
Geopolitical instability, specifically tensions in the Strait of Hormuz and maritime conflicts involving Iran and the US, is exerting upward pressure on oil and gas markets. Brent crude oil prices have approached 100 dollars per barrel, with Goldman Sachs analysts warning of potential rises to 120 dollars in extreme scenarios. Consequently, consumer fuel costs are rising across the continent. In France, the monthly fuel budget for gasoline drivers has reached an average of 137 euros, significantly outpacing the 46 euros spent by electric vehicle drivers.
