European Union faces political shifts and new membership safeguards

The European Union is facing potential political shifts and new regulatory frameworks for future members. The announcement of early elections by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has introduced uncertainty into the EU's political landscape. Experts suggest that a rightward shift in Madrid and Paris could weaken the progressive axis of the Union, potentially transforming the EU from an integration project into a mere cooperation project.

Simultaneously, the European Commission has proposed a new package of measures for future EU members. This includes a 15-year special monitoring period to ensure adherence to the rule of law. Under these proposals, new member states could face the suspension of EU funds or voting rights if they commit serious violations of democratic values. This mechanism aims to address limitations found in existing procedures, such as Article 7, to prevent democratic backsliding in newly integrated nations.
