European Union faces pressure over Ukraine funding and energy costs

European Union leaders are facing significant internal pressure regarding the long-term financing of aid to Ukraine. While a €100 billion aid package is proposed for the 2028-2034 period, some member states, including Germany, are seeking to reduce this amount.

Negotiations are occurring during a sensitive political period, with several member countries—including France, Spain, Poland, and Italy—preparing for elections in 2027. Public sentiment in these regions is reportedly becoming increasingly resistant to increased spending on the conflict.

Compounding these political tensions is a severe energy crisis within the bloc. Recent statistics indicate rising costs for essential goods, such as diesel fuel, which reached an average of 2.24 euros per liter in October. This economic strain is contributing to domestic instability as populations face higher living costs.
