European Union grants 10 million EUR for Hanoi Metro Line 3 extension
The European Union has provided a 10-million-EUR grant to support preparatory work for the extension of Hanoi Metro Line 3. Managed by the French Development Agency (AFD), the funds are designated for a feasibility study, transit-oriented development planning, traffic organization research, and multimodal connectivity solutions.
The proposed extension will run approximately 11 km entirely underground in the southern part of Hanoi, stretching from Hanoi Station to Hoang Mai. Preparatory activities are expected to be completed by the end of 2027. The project aims to integrate urban railway development with transit-oriented planning to improve public transport access and reorganize urban space.
Future construction investment for the extension is expected to be explored through the Team Europe cooperation mechanism, involving Germany’s KfW Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). The grant specifically covers research and project preparation rather than total construction costs.
