European Union implements cross-border driving license sanctions

New European Union directives have entered into force, fundamentally altering the framework for driving licenses across member states. Under directives (UE) 2025/2205 and (UE) 2025/2206, driving sanctions such as suspensions, withdrawals, or restrictions imposed in one member state will now be communicated to the issuing state to ensure they are enforced throughout the entire union.

The regulations also establish new validity periods: 15 years for car and motorcycle licenses (though member states may reduce this to 10 years if used as national ID), and 5 years for trucks and buses. Additionally, the directives facilitate a transition toward digital driving permits, which are expected to become the primary format by 2030.
