European Union implements European Health Data Space regulation
The European Union has implemented the European Health Data Space (EHDS) Regulation, establishing a new framework to improve access to electronic health data. This system is designed to facilitate the use of data for research, innovation, and regulatory purposes across the EU while providing individuals with greater control over their personal information.
The regulation is expected to shift the commercial landscape for life sciences companies, universities, and technology transfer offices. As high-quality datasets become strategic assets for training AI and biomarker discovery, existing collaboration agreements—which traditionally focused on intellectual property and patents—may require updates to address data access rights and secondary uses of information.
