European Union imposes sanctions over Russian elections in occupied Ukraine
The European Union has announced sanctions against individuals responsible for organizing Russian State Duma elections in occupied Ukrainian territories, including Crimea, Sevastopol, and parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas stated that the bloc does not recognize the legitimacy of these elections and will also target those who undermine free and fair elections within Russia.
In response to heightened regional tensions, the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has implemented temporary movement restrictions in the Slantsse and Kingisepp districts bordering Estonia. These measures, effective from September 16 to 26, include nighttime curfews and restrictions on small vessel traffic to prevent illegal migration and protect biological resources.
Across Europe, several nations are activating emergency contingency plans due to perceived Russian hybrid threats. The United Kingdom has advised citizens to stockpile essential supplies, while Germany has prepared a medical emergency plan to handle up to 1,000 casualties per day. Other nations, including Poland, Lithuania, and Finland, have increased military presence, border surveillance, and evacuation protocols in response to drone incursions and potential sabotage risks.
