European Union increases humanitarian aid to Myanmar by 10.5 million euros

The European Union has announced an additional 10.5 million euros in humanitarian aid for Myanmar, bringing the total support for the country in 2026 to 49.1 million euros. This funding aims to assist populations affected by ongoing conflict, displacement, and natural disasters, such as recent flash floods.

Since the military coup in February 2021, more than 100,000 lives have been lost. The aid will provide emergency healthcare, food, protection, shelter, and water and sanitation services. The crisis has escalated significantly, with 16.2 million people now requiring assistance, compared to approximately one million five years ago.

European Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, Hadja Lahbib, stated that the scale of the humanitarian crisis has changed beyond recognition. She noted that civilians face daily fear amidst a collapsing economy, a broken healthcare system, and severe hunger. Additionally, Myanmar remains a global leader in casualties caused by landmines and explosive remnants of war.
