European Union introduces Digital Product Passports
The European Union is gradually introducing a new regulatory framework known as the Digital Product Passport (DPP). This initiative, part of the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, aims to provide reliable information throughout a product's entire lifecycle, including material composition, origin, sustainability data, repairability, and recycling instructions.
Under this system, the European Commission will establish a central Digital Product Passport Register to manage and register data. Economic operators will be required to ensure that specified products contain the necessary information and are registered according to Union requirements. This measure is intended to promote a circular economy, improve resource efficiency, and increase transparency within the single European market.
For businesses, the transition presents both challenges and opportunities. While some companies face additional administrative burdens and the need for investment to adapt business processes, others view the regulation as a chance to develop more sustainable business models and strengthen their market positions. In Croatia, awareness of these new requirements is growing, though the level of preparedness among local companies varies.
