European Union introduces standardized disability card and parking permit

A new decree has been approved to implement the European Disability Card (EDC) and a standardized European parking permit, aimed at ensuring uniform recognition for persons with disabilities across the European Union. Based on EU Directive 2024/2841, these documents are designed to reduce disparities between member states and improve mobility and access to services.

The European Disability Card will serve as a simplified document to attest to a person's disability status without replacing official medical reports. It will be valid for 10 years and available in both physical and digital formats, including integration into the IT Wallet. In Italy, the document will be issued by INPS within 90 days of a request. The card is free and provides access to benefits in sectors such as transport, culture, leisure, and tourism.

The new European parking permit, which includes a QR code, is intended for individuals with reduced mobility, visual impairments, or mental and intellectual disabilities. While the issuance remains the responsibility of local municipalities, the permit will be recognized throughout the EU. Existing national parking permits will remain valid until August 4, 2026.
