In response, European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill stated that the strengthening of the Canada-EU association is not directed against any other nation but is focused on common strength.
Potential benefits of the alliance include increased labor mobility, such as Canadian youth potentially joining the EU’s Erasmus program, and enhanced research collaboration through programs like Horizon. The specific legal architecture of the ‘associate member’ status remains to be defined, as it is not currently provided for in existing EU treaties.
