EU to launch high-level defense group with Ukraine and UK experts
The European Union is launching a new high-level defense initiative to address critical gaps in Europe's conventional military capabilities. Announced by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas following a meeting of defense ministers in Ireland, the group will include senior political and military leaders from EU member states, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine.
Ukraine's participation is specifically intended to leverage its direct battlefield experience and combat innovations. The initiative aims to bring together top security and defense experts to find innovative solutions to strengthen the continent's security posture in response to Russian aggression.
Kallas emphasized that while Europe is investing in defense at unprecedented levels, increased spending alone is insufficient to ensure success. The group is expected to produce a report containing concrete recommendations for enhancing European defense capabilities. This move comes amid shifting security dynamics, including potential reductions in U.S. military presence and resources allocated to NATO defense plans.
