European Union maintains stable credit outlook from Moody's
Moody's Ratings has affirmed the European Union's long-term rating with a stable outlook, maintaining its potential top-tier 'Aaa' status. The credit rating agency highlighted the 'very strong capacity and willingness' of the 27 EU member states to provide financial support to the union.
Because the EU lacks its own paid-in capital, its budget financing and credit support depend almost entirely on its member states. This support is underpinned by an 'a1' weighted average share rating (WASR), which ranks among the highest for supranational organizations. The agency noted that this stability relies heavily on highly-rated large member states, specifically citing Germany, which accounted for 21.9 percent of total EU contributions last year.
Moody's indicated there are no signs of declining willingness among member states to meet EU obligations, noting that failure to do so would cause significant reputational damage and face legal hurdles due to the primacy of EU law. Furthermore, the EU's importance is expected to grow as it plays a central role in European rearmament efforts and the Security Action for Europe (SAFE) initiative.
