European Union mandates adaptive brake lights for new cars

The European Union has introduced a new safety regulation requiring all newly registered passenger cars to be equipped with adaptive brake lights, effective July 7, 2026.

Unlike standard brake lights that remain constant, the adaptive system is designed to flash rapidly during emergency braking at speeds exceeding 50 kilometers per hour. According to the VDA, this visual signal can reduce driver reaction times by an average of 0.2 seconds, potentially shortening braking distances by up to 5.5 meters at speeds of 100 kilometers per hour.

This measure is part of a broader safety concept introduced by the Federal Ministry of Transport. Other mandatory assistance systems include automatic emergency braking capable of detecting pedestrians and cyclists, emergency lane-keeping assistants, driver attentiveness monitoring, and intelligent speed controllers. The goal of these requirements is to reduce the number of serious traffic accidents involving injuries and fatalities.
