European Union mandates adaptive brake lights as driver distraction rises

The European Union has introduced new safety regulations requiring all newly registered passenger cars to be equipped with adaptive brake lights. According to the VDA, this system triggers a rapid flashing light during emergency braking at speeds exceeding 50 km/h, rather than a constant light. Research indicates this can reduce driver reaction times by up to 0.2 seconds, potentially shortening braking distances by 5.5 meters at 100 km/h.

In a separate safety context, data from Austria highlights a rising trend in traffic accidents caused by driver distraction. In 2025, inattentiveness accounted for 34 percent of recorded accidents, representing a 6.3 percent increase from the previous year. Most notably, fatal accidents linked to distraction rose by 18 percent, resulting in 122 deaths. Experts from the ÖAMTC warn that the increasing complexity of modern vehicle infotainment systems and touchscreens contributes to higher cognitive loads, urging drivers to avoid mobile phone use and set vehicle functions before starting a journey.
