European Union mandates adaptive brake lights for new cars

The European Union has introduced a new safety regulation requiring all newly registered passenger cars to be equipped with adaptive brake lights, effective July 7, 2026.

Unlike standard brake lights that remain constant when the pedal is pressed, the adaptive system triggers a rapid flashing signal during emergency full-braking maneuvers at speeds exceeding 50 kilometers per hour. According to the VDA, research indicates that drivers react significantly faster to flashing signals than to static light. This improved reaction time can reduce braking times by an average of 0.2 seconds, which translates to a reduction in braking distance of approximately 5.5 meters when traveling at 100 kilometers per hour.

This mandate is part of a broader safety concept that also includes requirements for automatic emergency braking systems.
