European Union mandates adaptive brake lights for new cars

The European Union has introduced a new safety regulation requiring all newly registered passenger cars to be equipped with adaptive brake lights, effective July 7, 2026.

Unlike traditional brake lights that remain constant when the pedal is pressed, the adaptive system is designed for critical situations. If a vehicle performs an emergency brake at speeds exceeding 50 kilometers per hour, the brake light will automatically flash rapidly. According to the VDA, this flashing signal can reduce driver reaction times by an average of 0.2 seconds, which can shorten braking distances by up to 5.5 meters at speeds of 100 kilometers per hour.

This requirement is part of a broader safety concept introduced by the BMV, which also includes mandatory assistance systems such as automatic emergency braking.
