European Union mandates adaptive brake lights for new cars

The European Union has introduced a new safety regulation requiring all newly registered passenger cars to be equipped with adaptive brake lights. According to the German Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV), this mandate is part of a broader safety concept that also includes mandatory automatic emergency braking systems.

Unlike standard brake lights that remain constant when the pedal is pressed, adaptive brake lights are designed to flash rapidly during emergency full-braking maneuvers at speeds exceeding 50 kilometers per hour. The VDA (Automotive Association) reports that drivers react up to 0.2 seconds faster to flashing signals compared to static lights. At a speed of 100 kilometers per hour, this improved reaction time can reduce the braking distance by approximately 5.5 meters.
