European Union mandates adaptive brake lights for new cars
The European Union has introduced a new safety regulation requiring all newly registered passenger cars to be equipped with adaptive brake lights, effective July 7, 2026.
Unlike standard brake lights that remain constant when the pedal is pressed, the adaptive system is designed to flash rapidly during emergency braking at speeds exceeding 50 kilometers per hour. According to the VDA, this flashing signal allows drivers to react up to 0.2 seconds faster on average. At speeds of 100 kilometers per hour, this improved reaction time can reduce the braking distance by approximately 5.5 meters.
This mandate is part of a broader safety concept introduced by the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV), which also includes requirements for other assistance systems, such as automatic emergency braking.
