European Union mandates digital identity wallets by 2026
The European Union has mandated that all member states provide citizens with at least one certified digital identity wallet, known as the EUDI wallet, by December 24, 2026. This digital tool will allow users to store and manage personal documents, such as identity cards, driver's licenses, diplomas, and health insurance data, directly on their mobile devices.
A key feature of the system is selective data sharing, enabling users to prove specific information—such as being of legal age—without revealing unnecessary details like a full date of birth or home address. While the digital wallet is intended to streamline services like opening bank accounts or renting vehicles, its use remains voluntary, and physical documents will continue to be valid.
Implementation speeds vary across the EU. Italy currently leads with approximately eight million monthly active users. In contrast, Germany plans to launch in January 2027, and the Netherlands has delayed its rollout until late 2027. Bulgaria is still developing the necessary legislative framework.
By July 2027, banks must be prepared to accept the digital wallet for client identification and anti-money laundering purposes. All other companies operating within the EU must be ready to accept the EUDI wallet by December 24, 2027.
