European Union mandates digital vehicle passes and speed assist

The European Union has adopted new regulations under the Euro 7 framework that will introduce digital vehicle passes for new cars. Starting November 29, all new vehicles receiving type approval must include a digital system, accessible via QR code, providing comprehensive data such as CO2 emissions, fuel consumption, engine power, and electric range.

A key feature of this digital pass is its ability to monitor the health and durability of high-voltage batteries in electric vehicles. This will allow buyers of used electric cars to easily verify remaining battery capacity and expected range, a process that currently often requires expensive external testing.

Additionally, EU requirements mandate that new vehicles include Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) technology. This system uses cameras, GPS, and map data to recognize speed limits and alert drivers if they exceed them. However, technical experts from NAF warn that these systems are not infallible, as errors can occur due to outdated maps, camera misreadings, or signs from adjacent roads, emphasizing that drivers remain legally responsible for following speed limits.
